Grappling and Rapier: Coming to Grips

Level: Some prior rapier experience is recommended, but not required

Gear: A rapier (and fencing mask for those who wish to practice at speed)

Description: While the rapier is often thought of as a weapon of finesse and agility, light grappling remains an integral part of many rapier systems. This workshop will introduce students to coming to grips or grappling with a rapier, as used by Giganti and Capo Ferro. Combined with taking the tempo, coming to grips is the single most effective way to take control of your opponent safely.

In addition to covering the mechanics and principles of coming to grips, this workshop will also cover the subject of taking the tempo. Because of the nature of grappling in rapier, offline movement and passing will be emphasized.
