“Und alle fechten komme ursachlich und grutlich vom ringen” This commonly quoted advice from the Nuremburg Hausbuch/”Doebringer” tells us that all fechten comes originally and completely from Ringen. Ringen is an essential component of the medieval fighting arts we study, and as the popularity of Ringen grows in the HEMA community many are met with a major barrier to entry: The lack of basic wrestling instruction provided in the medieval manuscripts makes the study of Ringen difficult and sometimes dangerous without an experienced instructor. To solve this problem, the US Historical Ringen Association (USHRA) has developed a curriculum that breaks down the extensive Ringen material into basic skills while remaining true to the primary sources. In an effort to jump-start Ringen training in the Northeast, this workshop (the second in a series of workshops) will explore the second half of the USHRA Level 1 Ringen curriculum. This workshop will be available to all with the goal of providing participants a basal understanding of Ringen to bring home and share with their school or club. (We will review material from the first workshop as well, for anyone who missed it earlier this year)
